The server will always run an index file if it appears in a folder that someone attempts to get to with a browser. That prevents them from seeing the folder contents, they only see the index page (whatever you design). Whatever file name you were told by Geocities to be the first one to run when someone goes to your site is the name you should use in all folders under your domain - Usually index.html, default.htm or similar. I usually make all the sub-folder indexes say "Please click HERE to go to the XYZ homepage" for instance.
A hacker could still look at your folder contents with the right software, but it keeps out the casual surfer and his browser. I'd guess most personal web sub-folders don't have an index file, and as in your case, it's not much of a security breach, unless you start hiding sensitive files up there.
