Hi Brian

This 2-part polyurethane coating thread demands a multi-page description of the material and the application process, versus snippets of miscellaneous information as is typical on a WWW forum. I wish I had a written reference for you, or had the time to write one myself. Perhaps one of the paint manufacturers can provide an application guide that will help. I believe Sterling Paints emphasizes brush and roller application methods.

Having said that, I need to repeat that I have been unsucessful at applying LP using a roller or brush, so I can't comment on what brush or roller to use. My only germain comment on that subject is-don't roller or brush LP. Spray it.

Regarding the wait time between coats. LP is usually sprayed wet-on-wet for as many coats as the surface can stand before it sags. As it flashes quickly upon application, I usually start spraying a kayak at the bow, go down one side and up the other with a light "mist" coat. Once back at the bow, I wait about 20 minutes for the mist coat to flash off, and recoat with a thicker coat to cover. I repeat this process as many times as I think I can get away with before it sags. It usually takes about 30-40 minutes to make a single application of LP on either the deck or hull of a kayak.

I let this application cure for several days before wet sanding with 220, used wet. I don't rush this part of the finishing, as premature sanding will break through the green (and thus still soft) LP and really make a mess. I then repeat the process with a second application. Note I haven't said anything about the number of coats are in each application. That's because it varies on temperature, humidity, type of gun you are using, air volume, color of LP you are using, amount of "hot sauce" (acellerator) in the mix, technique, how you hold your tongue, etc. etc. ad nauseum. It does build quickly, but will sag if you get overly enthusiastic with either a gun or a brush.

Like I said, I think this thread demands more than a couple of paragraphs from me to fully understand. But maybe some of this helps.

Pete
