I use 36 and 50 grit sand paper on the inside to get rid of most of the steps and then use some epoxy/woodflour/micro-spheres putty to fill any low points. I try for a good cosmetic finish were visable, but elsewhere I just want an even surface for the glass. The surface left by course sandpaper is not bad because it promotes a good bond with the epoxy.
