What is Flash off and how does one recognize it?

I used to have a gun like the $39 Centrl Pneumatic gun (actually it was one). I worked at a place that assembled kit cars, and we used it to paint a couple of them with good results. Mild orange peel the first car we did, then as we got the thinning and gun adjusting right it went better. Even the orange peel was mild enough to rub and buff out.

I left them my gun to borrow after I left, and they're probably still using it! I never had the heart to ask for it back, since I wasn't using it. Maybe I'll try to call them...

By the way, one of thr biggest weaknesses of HVLP guns is that they don't atomize the paint very well (according to "Wood" magazine)
