WE may disagree, but boats are not household items

: They cover many times that amount for guns, cameras, computers, jewelry, etc.
: without any additional riders or premiums, but not boats. And they gave no
: reason why.

While everyone here has a boat at their house, and thinks it is perfectly normal, insurance companies do not share our views.

We accept that our auto insurance (and motorcycle) is not sold as a rider on our homeowners policy, nor is our health insurance, nor is our life insurance. These are all separate entities. In some states an insurance agent must have totally different licenses to sell life insurance and auto insurance. (Illinois is one I know of.)

There is totally separate insurance available for boats. It is called marine insurance, and your State Farm insurance broker may not be the right person to handle it, but an independent insurance agent might. The reason behind this is that a State Farm agent works for only State Farm and only sells their insurance lines (car, home, life) while independant insurance agents may represent many different companies and many different lines of insurance -- depending on the licensing they hold. Check the local phone book for any listings for independant insurance agents. While some of the *major* names, like Allstate or State Farm employ agents to handle their products exclusively, there are many large companies who sell their insurance through independant agents, so you will certainly want to ask. If the first person you call does nto handle marine insurance, ask if they know someone in town who does. these guys (and gals) know where the competition is, and they might save you a few phone calls.

Hope this helps
