I haven't tried that, but I did try to use a heavy duty Porter Cable random orbit polisher for sanding. This did not work well. The paper wanted to stay in one place and the machine wanted to move.
I think the lateral travel on a polisher is greater than on a sander. I'm not sure how this might effect the polishing operation. Might be worth a try.
