: John: the asymmetrical outrigger/ama has been done (evidence Hobie) but as a
: long-time Hobie 14 & 16 sailor I can assure you it doesn’t work very
: well, leeway is significant in those boats. There are even a fair number
: of asymmetrical proas sailing around without leeboards of any type.
: However, to me at least, the trade off in drag and difficulty of design is
: not worth it when a proper leeboard/centerboard/daggerboard is relatively
: easy to build, mount, and operate.

: Well, thanks for letting a newby spout. Any ideas on my pet project here are

Hi Porter,

I hope to see what you come up with if you build this sailing rig. My impressions are a little different from yours as to how effective the asyammetrical haul is compaired to the center boards. I sailed a center boarder for 10 years, a cat for 27 and have sailed the 14 and 16 hobi's. I didn't notice that much of a difference in the sideward slip. I had a McGregger 15' cat and in high wind and big waves I have submarined the leeward pontoon completely under water and not flipped, so getting the size just right for yak outrigger pontoons could be hard to do I think, and how hard you want to push it in rough weather. The different pictures I have seen of pontoons on different yaks could be easily be submarined I think because they were so small but that would depend on sail area and mast hight also.

Keep us informed,
John
