Use a clean lint free rag to apply the varnish. I have used this method with other projects over the years. I actually rub mine until it's almost dry. No drips no runs, a nice satin finish. After a few coats, I let it sit for a few days and buff it to a gloss if I want. No real skill involved, but it gets the job done and it looks great.
Different people use variations on this. I think Spidey uses his rag like a brush, though I'm not sure.
