Hi Pete,
Edgar's release method is pretty ingenious. He ran a small S.S. cable from the cockpit thru the bulkhead. It is attached to one end of the bungee that is fed thru the hull anchors and loosely hooked onto the hatch. Pulling the cable tightens the bungee and secures the hatch. The cable in the cockpit is looped around a hook attached to the hull.
The picture below shows my side mount hatch hooks. Edgar's hatches have hooks fore and aft, inline with the centerline of the hatch. He uses a single cable to tighten the bungee. I will probably use two cables, one on each side because my hooks are on the sides of the hatch. If I pull on one end of the bungee in the picture, it will pull down on the hatch. The bungees will be connected to the cables which runs thru the bulkhead into the cockpit, allowing me to release the the tension on the hatch. So I can use my hatch finger notch to lift the hatch. It is still in the thinking stage for my boat. Maybe Edgar can describe his unique method better than I can?
