Community colleges (Jr. college) often have nice woodshops, and sometimes an instructor will let you work on your own after you take the basic safety related stuff. Some even have open lab hours. Shop teachers tend to help each other out, so if they have an auto finish class, you can sometimes get spray booth (cleanroom) access for things like varnishing a boat.
