You're in good company John. There is not a person on this board who hasn't had to deal with annoying imperfections and loathsome do-overs. You are an awesome woodworker and you will prevail eventually.

PS: You can apply two coats of varnish in one day. Save the fancy roof rack for later - foam blocks and straps are not ideal but more than adequate.
