These compasses are designed to be viewed from a bit of a distance. You don't want to look down at them. It takes some getting used to, but they work well. If you are comfortable using orienteering compasses you might want to stick with them, but if you use the kind that requires you rotate the bezel to set a course, a little bit of nasty waves might show you the advantage of a hands-free, direct-reading compass. And looking down in rough conditions makes some people sea sick.
