In Response To: Varnishing Problems - Bubbles (Bill)

: I have begun varnishing my project, but I am having problems. I am using
: Epifanes varnish and I'm getting tiny bubbles all over the place. (it is
: the type advertised as no sanding between coats required) It seems to
: occur as soon as I apply the varnish to the boat. I have tried both china
: bristle brush and two types of foam brushes, all with the same results. My
: Guillemot has West System Epoxy, and it has been well cured and sanded
: with 100 grit. I then washed the hull with paint thinner and let dry for a
: day. Weather here on Bainbridge Island (near Seattle) is a bit cool at
: night, temps into the high 50's, moderate humidity, but no rain (thank
: goodness).

: I could sure use a bit of advice on this. Any suggestions?

The static charge created after sanding epoxy attracts dust on the first coat of varnish. This dust can "look" like tiny bubbles. Wet sand with 220 wet/dry paper unless you want a skid proof finish. Consecutive coats will not attract that much dust.

All the best,
