That's a different thought! I think that would be interesting an give limitless design possibilities. I am in the midst of building a Guillemot Expedition (which is fun and turning out beautiful), but I thought I would build my wife a light quick to build boat. I initially thought about using a thin polystyrene foam with a "stitich and glue" approach. Your carved idea seems really interesting as well. I am just unwilling to pay the kind of cash that the boatbuilding foams seem to require. I think with the right layup of glass and epoxy it could have the structural strength of a fiberglass boat or a stitch and glue boat. I'm mostly interested in a 50 hour project rather than a 150 hour project. Does it have enough sheer strength to work?
One other thought. It might be possible to glue up layers of polystyrene into
: say, a block 14" high, 24" wide and 17' long. Then mark the
: center lines, station section lines and top and side shape on the block of
: polystyrene and cut and to shape. You would fit outside templates shaped
: to the form for each station that would be fit from the hall center line
: to the deck center line. Then fiberglass the outside. This would all be
: done without a strong back. Then the hard part of just taking out enough
: foam to fit you and at the same time carving in your seat, hip pads, knee
: pad, foot braces all in one swoop and then fiberglassing the inside. I
: know it's wild.
