Actually, I was looking at paddles in a book on skin boats and some of the paddles had what certainly looked like fish-tails, but they were at the shoulder where the loom meets the blades, kind of a hooky looking point on each side, and this was said to be drip prevention. Others had several grooves around the loom there, apparently for the same reason. I guess these guys disliked water in their laps more than they needed a smooth transition loom to blade.
