I've had good results with the nylon. I sew it semi tight then mist it with a spray bottle of water then let dry in the sun. It then shrinks drum tight. The key is using moisture and heat for the shrink to set (sun, steam, ect) moisture alone will not set. Nylon is easy to sew and very forgiving. I've not used polyester.
