I built "JAM 8" a few years back for my then 8 year old. It's a simple , stich & glue 7'4" x 30" V bottom, 28# kayak made from 1/8 ply. It took about 40hrs and $100 to complete. ( I glassed the bottom for those "ramming speed" landings.) He was a bit young for it then but has realy grown into it. The nice thing about it is that it's so stable it's almost imposable for him to flip it. I got the plans from a guy who designed/built it and was featured in the "launchings" section of WB mag. It's anice little boat that he will grow into vice out of. ( Actually designed for small adults.) You can contact Ed Sutt JR. @PO BOX 4222, Clemson SC 29632 for the plans.
Good luck
