I picked-up a badger brush on my way home last night. It's 3 inch wide and cost around $19 (less than I had expected).. As soon as I started using it, I knew I had made the right decision. It held a lot of varnish, it made it very easy to control the thickness of the application, and this time I had zero runs around the shear onto the deck and no sags. I used the technique desribed in Featherweight Boatbuilding, which was this: apply the varnish across the grain first, then tip off with the grain moving in the direction of dry to wet. Worked perfectly!
