Sounds cool. You might consider using heavy rubber bands at close intervals (maybe 4 inches apart) on the stack. Or, if you are short on big rubber bands, cut some sections about an inch or so long from an old bicycle inner tube. The elastic nature of these things should keep the stack together, but allow you to twist it. If you use alternating layers of light and dark colored woods (stain half the strips in your stack) the twist will be accented and you'll have a very attractive paddle.
