1/2" gaps sound awfully big. Are these gaps where the end of one strip butt up against another strip? Are you having problems getting the length correct. This is not easy and is understandable if you are having some problems. Try making the fit with two pieces. Fit one end of one piece and the other end with another piece, then make a right angle butt joint in the middle where it is easier to get the length right.

You can fill pretty large gaps with thickened epoxy, but wood is better. You might make some slivers of wood to fit in any gaps.
