Couple of things come to mind Mark, not the least of which is that it sounds like you were using the saw improperly. If that is just a little portable table unit, they aren't designed for handling large heavy pieces, for the very reason you discovered. If it's all you've got, and you've got to use it, then I would heartily agree with making it all solid, widening the base, and ballasting the thing. I would also suggest you keep the table top very clean, smooth and slick. Steel wool and carnuba wax are your friends!
