Use epoxy resin. Polyester resin disolves styrene. Yes, it is more expensive material. No, you can not put on just one layer of epoxy to seal it and then finish with the cheaper polyester.

Aw, ya gotta get that Frank Sinatra record and play it while you experiment. (. . . and more, much more than this, I did it my way)

My other post suggested building a model first. This is a quick, and not too expensive way to test your construction concept and your design. you can get some feel for the materials and check their compatibility at the same time. They build other things from foam cores which are covered with glass cloth and resin: Surfboards, solar cars, kayak seats, etc.
