You might be able to rent a table saw---if you don't need it it's a lot of money, but fiddling around with all the work to put a circular saw in place of a table-saw is a lot of time too and it might not work well enuf for good strips.
you don't have to use full strips----i thought i was supposed to, but lots of people build them with scarfed strips or just end-butted. as long as you don't line up the joints of the butts it will still be very strong. it is nice to have a few long strips for the shears and the keel strips. maybe a lumber yard would do them for you at a reasonable price. just keep asking questions on this bulletin board---lots of good advice and pics on it. ask any question you want. and look up topics on the archives too. your strips get a lot shorter as you work up from the shears so you don't need all 17' strips.
