:I will disclaim that by noting that the Eskia I was paddling at the time is : more subject to weathercocking than the Explorer he was paddling.

My kayaking career has just passed its first anniverary, but I am about to build a second boat (Bluefin) for me (built one from my wife in between)

I'd like to say away from a skeg design that breaks through the deck like the Chesapeake Light Craft skeg. The boats I built are the CLC 17LT and 16LT. I bought the CLC skeg kits for each but haven't installed them, but these boats track well.

One of the few boats I have paddled much was an Eskia with a quartering wind (in April at Half Moon Bay). I had great difficulty and part of the deal (this was a class) was that we could not use the rudder.

I've read the Andrew Waddington description of a skeg that only requires a break through the keel. That is the solution that is most appealing to me at this time.
