Skin-on-Frame: What kind of skin treatment is this? *LINK*

I have been all over the web researching different methods of SOF building before I start building my first boat. Most people it seems skin their boats with either cotton duck or nylon and treat with paint or urethane type stuff. I am curious what was used on these boats:

They seem to have been built in a very traditional manner, and I am wondering it this is some natural dye that they are using or what it is. Does anyone know?
