Hi Pat

I found a good solution from the book "Savvy Paddler" from Doug Alderson. It goes like this:

Cut 3 inch wide lengths of closed-cell foam from a cheap mat and roll them up into cylinder shapes. Wrap them in tape and tie them to the roof bars. The kayak goes in between them, resting on a padded mat and the rolls stop it rocking. You could probably wrap the sleeping mat foam around the roof bars too and tape them tight.

Hope it helps
George

Hi
: I have bought heavy duty roof bars for my van and find the run of the mill
: roof bar protectors like the surfers use are too small and won't fit. My
: usual way forward is to use hot water pipe insulation and duct tape to pad
: bars to carry kayaks but was wondering if anybody had any other ideas as
: the tape usually tears after a while and looks a bit daggy?..
: cheers
