Miklos, I made a similar cut in my boat's hull but along the keelline. I wanted to set a separate, wider piece in instead of fitting each strip's end. To do it, I cut a length of OSB and hot-melt tacked it alongside the channel to be cut. I positioned it as perfectly as I could by making accurate tick marks at each form. I used my carving knife to trim one edge as finely as I could. Then I finished stripping the other side of the hull and trimmed that accordingly. To make it look absolutely clean, I made a sanding block that slid inside the slot and smoothed it. It worked very well.
Despite all that, it didn't occur to me that I could do the same thing for a contrasting waterline stripe. I may give it a try in the future.
