An old guy taught me to sail back in the 50’s and I was so appreciative, but he insisted I use correct sailing terminology when on his boat. He was Captain Bly and I obeyed. But I had terminology up to my eyeballs.

I am now reading the book “ Kabloona in the Yellow Kayak” recommended on this board, about a woman who paddled about 5000 miles up and into the Beaufont Sea in the Artic Circle. There she ran into two know-it-all 20 something kayakers in a double with all the latest and best equipment and told her they were kayak instructors and bla-bla-bla, we are so good and you don’t even know the terminology of kayaking. They had to turn back and she went on to finishing one of the great kayaking trips of all time. So it isn’t what you say but what you know that counts.

Another great book with kayakers is “Running The Amazon by Joe Kane”
