Bell produced the Merlin before they started producing the Merlin II. The Merlin was designed by Bruce Kunz. The Merlin II was designed by David Yost. I believe Charlie Wilson covered the difference in a thread over at pnet. They are different boats though and perform much much differently. I prefer the Merlin II.

I suspect that the Bear Mnt. Freedom Solo in the 15'3" size will be closer in performance to the Merlin II than the Merlin is to the Merlin II.
