: Hi Chris,
: I'm not familiar with the expression, but I'm not sure that I would call it
: a kayak anymore. I'm not sure what I would call it at all; a kayak with
: boudoir? It certainly isn't pretty. However, not to take anything away
: from the boys, to paddle across the Tasman Sea is quite something,
: whatever it is they're paddling.

Hi John,

Of course, there is an established thinking process regarding the "Form Follows Function" line of thought on things like this, that supposedly came from the Bauhaus design studio back in the early twentieth century. While that's not true, it still holds purpose for an ethos of a sort, that states that all excess ornamentation should be removed in favor of the purpose of the form itself. You can see more on this topic here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Form_follows_function

Needless to say, it would look, very convincingly, that the "kayak" in question is highly purposeful for the intended quest. Once can't argue that it is propelled by two paddlers using double bladed paddles, or that they are arranged in a fore/aft orientation, or that the boat is essentially linear in its form; all kayak style form definitions.

I'm not going to get into the business of what is and what is not a kayak as the argument is, literally, endless in nature.

What I will say is that this boat, in the hands of these two amazing entrpreneurs of the watersports realm, have set out to achieve a thing that so few of us will ever entertain, much less accomplish. All other iterations of this discussion are but small potatoes in comaparison to what they are attempting to do. And I say that with all due respect to your well-regarded opinion.
