Hi,
I really don't think you should go to 1/8" as the rigidity of the kayak will be compromised. The further apart the inside and outside layers of the glass are, the more rigid the structure becomes. Therefore, you need thicker strips, and so weight will become an issue. So the advice to use it as accent strips only is good.
