Hey Kudzu,

I trick I like to do when designing the stripping patterns for boats is to take a picture of an existing boat and overlay designs on the computer. I use The Gimp. It's a nice drawing program made for almost every platform out there and free. What's nice is you can use actual images of wood as patterns. It gives a rough picture of what the boat would look like. with multiple layers you can bounce back and forth between different options with a few mouse clicks. Below is one option for a Njord I'll be starting in a few weeks.
