I built a solid 2x4"x 13'11" beam out of 8'by 4" wide strips of 1/2 plywood. Took four layers laminated with the joints overlapped at two foot intervals. Solid, stable, and pretty darn strong. Looked like this from the top before I glued the pieces together with Titebond glue:
