: OK, here is the illustration.

: It will probably raise more questions than it answers, but I think that
: looking at some pictures of these situations helps people to visualize the
: potential problems.

: With a wide, flat bottom boat, when it starts to fill with water it becomes
: harder to keep the hull flat. The boat tends to tip, the water flows into
: the corner between the floor and the side, and the width of the waterline
: will become smaller, and thus less stable. With a boat with a roughly oval
: or parabolic shape, as the boat tips, the waterline increases, and the
: boat becomes more stable. With a deep hull with a narrow flat bottom the
: effect is much slighter. The water is further down, and acts more like
: ballast, even with a pretty severe tilt.

: That is my take on it at least.

Paul you are really good in your clear minded scientific thinking and you make the best most beautiful graphics. It easily explains why my friends and I capsized in our flat bottom boat. As the water rushed to the side, that side became a V bottom with water ballast and the most stable portion of the boat, for the boat but not for us humans. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Why I wouldn't want a flat bottom.
