If we use the same ~2" length we see in a scarf on the typical 1/4" panel, the length of the joint is 1/8" + 2" + 1/8" = 2 1/4" or 2.25" while the same scarf length is aprox 2.016". By hand the scarf is far simpler, and more than adequet. CNC accuracy should make this joint very effective, as long as the set up can be done in around the same kind of time as a hand planed scarf.
