: A question for you stich and glu-rues,

: A friend of mine is building a 16' Mill Creek.
: It will be used primarily for duck hunting, will be painted a dull green so
: pretty veneer surfaces are not important.

: A local lumber yard has a sale on 1/8 Mahogany ply right now, I looked at it
: and it is nice looking material, no evidence of voids etc.

: The list of required materials with his plans call for 1/4" ply for the
: bottom. 1/8" for the sides and deck.
: The 1/4" is not on sale and he would be looking at over $80.00 per sheet
: as opposed to $11.00 for the 1/8".

Consider !/4 inch lauan for the hull. Or, laminate two 1/8th inch panels ot make one that is 1/4 inch thick. If you do this you can forget fancy scarfing, too. Lay up the panels like bricks, with the joint on the top being backed by approximately the middle of the panel underneath it. "Paint" the panels wiht a waterproof glue or epoxy resin, stack them, and place under weights until the glue sets up. If you work with strips that are a bit wider than the parts you'll need, instead of trying this with full 4x8 panels, the process should be a bit easier. For each 1/4 inch panel called for in the instructions you'll need 2 1/8th inch panels, but you are comparing $22 plus glue and time to $80. that is a significant difference in price. Sonds lik this is only for a few pieces, so the extra effort should not be excessive.

Hope this helps
