How about trying those slick spline joints. These are the cat's meow! you get perfect alignment, a nice finished seam and no flat spots! The picture below shows a mockup of one and the URL listed shows the setup on the shaper. These are the coolest joints I've seen.

I've used both tape and block butt joints. The tape does cause discoloration. My butt blocks didn't cause flat spots, but I put them on preassembled panels (plywood Walrus).
