... that I've used on docks that are just a bit too high for the "sit on shaft resting on coaming" method:
I sit on edge of dock with feet in the cockpit. left hand grabs paddle shaft and far edge of coaming, loosely. Paddle passes behind me and right hand grabs paddle shaft and edge of dock behind me. I lower myself into seat and push feet in (cockpit is keyhole-type).
The paddle shaft just keeps the boat from drifting away from dock, it supports no weight at all and thus can not break. To put it differently, my arms and the paddle shaft form a triangle and the shaft keeps my hands at a fixed distance apart.
Did that sound weird enough 
, or shall I add a third description? Hmmmm... better not. Well, maybe this: my weight is mostly on my feet, and only a small part on the hand holding the dock edge, and a _very_ small part on the hand holding the coaming.
