: Um, what's a drawknife? Not familiar with that terminology.

A drawknife is pretty neat. They are used for roughly shaping things like chair legs. You hold onto the handles, and pull the knife towards your chest. It's actually much safer than it looks or sounds. The biggest risk of injury is probably having the workpiece come loose if it wasn't clamped tight enough. The piece might then jab you in the chest and give you a small bruise. If that ever happens to you, you will make sure it never happens again by clamping it tighter next time. You control the depth of the cut by changing the angle of the blade against the wood. It's very easy to learn with a little practice.

You can probably find a used drawknife on e-bay for $15 or so. They can be bought brand new from catalogs, but cost $60 or more.

If you have a jigsaw already, you can do without a drawknife when making paddles. It's just more fun when you have the right tool.
