I met a guy at the Canadian Canoe and Kayak Festival in Ottawa this summer that had an amazing carbon fiber paddle. He made it himself when he worked at Langford Canoes. It has a hollow carbon fiber shaft and handle. The blade is made of fiberglass over balsa, with an ash center that extends into the end of the hollow carbon shaft about 4". The entire paddle felt almost weightless to me. I can't remember how much it weighs, but you could get more information from Langford Canoes.
I intend on making a similar paddle this winter. Once I have worked out my design, I will post it on the web.
