I stumbled across this today, while trying to identify some mystery pallet wood. Our public servants will do the heavy lifting for us.

"The Center for Wood Anatomy Research will identify a maximum of five wood samples per fiscal year (October 1 — September 30) as a free public service to U.S. citizens."

They can identify genus, and sometimes sub-genus groupings, but not species. Close enough for our purposes, I would guess.
