With the Port Oford ceder; out of 11 ribs, 3 were keepers. We had problems with runnout, ribs snapping, ribs folding in on themselves. It was a mess. The POC had been soaked for 2 weeks. When we switched to white oak (that had been soaked for one week) our success rate went up to 8 out of 10. Our oak ribs were narrower than the ceder ribs @ 7/8 inch. With a hard wood there is no need to have as beefy of ribs as Morris suggests. This also helps bring down the weight caused by using hard wood.

The Greenland frame with the White Oak ribs is very sturdy. More more so than my Walrus frame. Just a note: The gunwhales on the greenland are POC. The POC was only mildly successful in this use. We have spotted micro cracks in places.
