I haven't seen anything in the same price range as a Record, but Veritas makes a low angle spokeshave that looks nice for ~$40. I haven't used one, but a friend has one and likes it. I'm probably going to order one and also one of their low angle block planes. I'll set up my Record 'shave and plane to use for roughing out and use the Veritas tools for fine work. If you have any questions about it, the instructions are on the web site and you can print them out. Just click on the "instr" link near the price.

BTW, if you order the Veritas spokeshave, be sure to order the blade holder for sharpening it, too. It's under the "acc" link.
