some folks have used tape and straps but you have to be careful not to have the straps warp things. Drywall screws and wood plates work but leave holes, the problem with staples(although I've never done it) is that they may not hold the wood without some spring back or ripping of the underlying sheer clamp if they are big enough to hold, I'd be curious to hear from folks on that one. If you do use ring nails, and the finish can be made smooth and attractive with them, wait until after the glue is cured to sink the nails slightly below the wood surface. If you overwhack the nails you've got a hole to deal with. With sufficient rounding over, walking up and down the boat with a big mill file to round the heads as necessary you can make it smooth for the epoxy and glass.
