The ribs are Alaskan yellow cedar. I tried cypress that I had, but it didn't steam well. I tried some ash, which steamed nicely, but the piece I used had bad grain and just didn't cooperate. So I ended up with the cedar which steamed very nicely and had perfect straight grain.
