: Joe American doesn't necessarily have it any better. Our corporations aren't
: complaining, though.

: We're still paying as much for WRC as we used to. The small loggers and mills
: are screaming because of the low prices of imported Canadian lumber, but
: we don't pay any less at the yard.

: psst...I'll meet you at an undisclosed, off-highway section of the
: border with 50 gallons of epoxy and trade you for a truckload of western
: red cedar and Alaskan yellow cedar!

Several lumber mills have closed in BC just in the last year with thousands of good paying jobs being lost. Our province still allows raw log exports to the US and overseas. It has been estimated that all the old growth in BC will be gone in less than 15 years. Some second growth is almost as good but tight grained red cedar will be a thing of the past, the volume of yellow cedar is much less than red and will also be gone.

Interesting that at least two of the mega-lumber companies are from the US, they are Weyerhauser and Pope&Talbot. I guess the US will take advantage of BC wood if the provincial and federal governments hold open the door for them, but it means people will lose jobs in BC and perhaps the end of several smaller communities.

When you buy ANY wood ask if it is FSC certified , which means that it is harvested on a sustainable basis on what is good for the long-term health of the forest and the communities dependent upon them.

FSC is an acronym for the Forest Stewardship Council their website is

www.fscoax.org ;)
