From your description, the size sounds OK. Before I made mine, I made a cardboard model of it. I also made a cardboard deck. I tested the coaming fit by tacking the modle to the hull and sitting in it. It gave me a good idea of what the real coaming would feel like.

If you have the hull finished, you could also rig up the model in it and then sit in it. If you don't have the hull, you could sit on the floor with the model in the position it would be in the kayak.
