A building buddy and I are now legends in our own minds having placed 2nd in a local wood art show with our kayaks. Perspective is everything for an event like this. All the wooden kayaks in our area were entered (his and mine) and the category seemed made to order – functional art work. On the other hand, it is a small community and it seemed they added a few categories so nobody’s feelings would be hurt. We placed 2nd or possibly last ‘cause we were never sure how many were in that category. It was a joint second because we didn’t stick around after we hung them and the judges didn’t know who belonged to what. Probably a good thing, you don’t want someone to have hurt feelings when you are swimming down a river and they have the throw bag. First prize went to a drop dead beautiful grandfather’s clock and the grand prize went to some carved wooden birds. They made a special category for the birds. The artist is considered one of the best in the world and they didn’t want anyone to have to compete against him -- he wouldn’t have felt right about it either. Pictures of the boats did make front page of the local paper. I think they put in pictures to encourage us to buy extra papers – it worked. We would like to thank Rob Macks for designing a beautiful boat with an elegant name, the Panache. The boats are great to paddle. However, after practicing rescues last night in the local pool, my body says they are a lot of work to roll. I will persevere, it just wouldn’t look right with a sp****n.
