Strip: Magnetic Hatch Cover Retention

Based on a mention of magnets for hatch retention by Rob Macks and some additional feedback from Ted Henry, I decided to combine the use of magnets with Vaclav’s (One Ocean Kayaks) recessed hatch gasket methods. I’m happy to report that the hatches seal very well with no leakage, even during rolling. I have the rare earth magnets spaced between 4.75 and 5.75 inches apart. Each of the hatch lips has a “divot” where I can get to the edge of the hatch cover. Unfortunately, the magnets are strong enough that I can’t get my hatches open without a tool when my fingers are cold. Guess they’ll be sporting little nylon ribbon tabs after all. :(

Thanks to Rob, Ted, and Vaclav for their creative ideas!
