If you are drilling a smaller hole, maybe a brad-point will do the job just as well and is much cheaper than the Forstner. Brad points have the sharp wings that precut the border as the point starts into the center. Whichever you use, they/it should be sharp. Dull bits grab and tear the surface materials.
